Lady Warriors Open Season with Pair of Victories

December 3/4, 2020 -- ORLANDO

The OCP Lady Warriors basketball team began their 2020-21 season with two victories in consecutive nights to jump start the new season.

Opening on the road against Forest Lake Academy, OCP controlled the game with a lead that grew at the end of each quarter against the Panthers. The Lady Warriors led by 5 after one, 10 at halftime, and 16 at the end of the third on their way to a 55-46 victory.

Junior Jasmine Wright led OCP in scoring with 15 points (7-12 FG, 1-2 3FG) and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Siarah Brown had 14 points, 7 assists, with 4 steals, and freshman Trinity Harden chipped in 14 points on 6-9 shooting from the field.

The Lady Warriors turned around the next night to host their first home game of the year against a tough Academy of the Holy Names (Tampa) team that required a fifth quarter before it could be decided.

Trailing 34-31 with about a minute to go in the fourth quarter, Harden knocked down a three-pointer from the corner to tie the game at 34. Both teams had multiple possessions in the final minute, yet neither could score.

Holy Names had the last possession with 3.7 seconds remaining in regulation inbounding in front of their bench, but were unable to get off a shot thanks to a deflection on the inbound by freshman Aracelis Jimenez that resulted in a loose ball as time expired.

In overtime, Wright scored six of the team's eight points to secure a 42-38 victory. The junior co-captain had a game-high 18 points with 16 of those coming in the second half and overtime. Sophomore co-captain Brown added 10 points and 12 rebounds with 7 steals.

Head coach Chris Cenicola was pleased with the effort of his young team that has one senior on the 11-player roster against two talented, well-coached teams.

The Lady Warriors (2-0) will host Lyman and Freedom high school on Tuesday December 8 (6:00 pm) and Thursday December 10 (7:00 pm), respectively. Then, they will travel to Deltona on Friday December 11 to play Deltona HS, 6:00 pm tip-off.
