Playoffs begin where they plan to end for Warriors

February 9, 2021 --

For the top-ranked OCP Warriors the journey back to Lakeland for the FHSAA state championships begins in Lakeland Tuesday evening at Victory Christian Academy with the Class 2A, District 11 semifinals against Faith Christian Academy.  The Warriors (20-0) will be looking to win their second consecutive state championship and fourth in past five seasons under head coach Treig Burke.

On Thursday, the class of 2021 seniors - Joshua Blazquez, Camden Easley, Omar Figueroa, and Ocypher Owens - helped lead the Warriors to the program's first unbeaten regular season with an 84-46 victory over Cocoa High School on a night that doubled as the Homecoming game for Orlando Christian Prep students

Senior guard Omar Figueroa led 11 Warriors in scoring with a game-high 22 points on 8-10 from the field, 5 of 6 from behind the arc, and 5 rebounds. Senior forward Ocypher Owens added 11 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Senior guard Josh Blazquez added 8 points and 3 steals, and Senior forward Cam Easley contributed 4 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks.

The 84-point output was the highest of the season, eclipsing the 82 points OCP scored in the season-opener against Oviedo in November.  Dating back to the start of the 2020 calendar year, the Warriors have won 40 consecutive games, which is the longest active streak in the state of Florida among any FHSAA or independent prep school.

Coach Burke reminded the team following the senior night game that beginning with the first playoff game the only streak that matters is going 1-0. The FHSAA reverted back to their long-standing district playoff format for this season which means only the two participants of the district championship advance to the regionals. And once the regionals begin, the season is over with a loss.

FAMILIAR OPPONENT

Tonight's district semifinal opponent is a familiar foe for the Warriors. Faith Christian Academy is 4.8 miles away from OCP and the schools usually play one or two games against each other in practically every high school and middle school sport, with the exception of basketball lately.

The two schools will travel 58 miles to play for the first time in 2 years. Since the FHSAA stopped requiring teams to play at least every team in their district at the start of the 2019-2020 season, OCP and FCA have not met on the basketball court since February 2019 in the Class 3A District Semifinals. OCP won that contest 76-35.

Faith Christian (13-9), seeded 4th, defeated 5-seed International Community 80-59 in last night's opening round district game.  The Lions average 65.5 points per game and are led by Josiah Sarasty in points (18.0), assists (3.9) and steals (2.2) per game.

The Warriors are allowing opponents an average of 43.9 points per game and have an average winning margin of 23.7 points per game.  Figueroa and junior guard A.J. Brown average a team-high 14.6 and 14.5 points per game, respectively. Junior forward Ven-Allen Lubin averages 12.8 points and a team-high 6.9 rebounds per game.

The winner of this contest faces the winner of the 2-vs-3 seed matchup between (Kissimmee) City of Life Christian and host Victory Christian Academy on Friday February 12 at 7pm.
