Congratulations to junior guard A.J. Brown and head boys basketball coach Treig Burke for being recognized by the Florida Athletic Coaches Association (FACA) as the District 11 Class 2A Player and Coach of the Year, respectively, for the 2020-21 season.

The awards were announced following district tournaments as the OCP boys basketball team were 22-0 following their district championship win over City of Life Christian Academy.  The Warriors advanced their record to 25-0 with a return trip to the Class 2A states semifinals in Lakeland where they will begin the defense of their 2020 Class 2A state championship on March 3.

Brown averages a team-high 14.4 points per game with 5 rebounds per, 2.1 assists per and 1.5 steals per game.  He has scored in double-digits in 20 of the team's 25 games heading into the state semfinals.  On the season, Brown has shot 38% from the 3-pt line and 54% from inside arc. Brown also shoots 80% at the free-throw line.

Some of Brown's best performances during the season have come in some spotlight games and tournaments.

  • He was recognized as the MVP of the prestigious Winter Park Rotary Tip-Off Classic in early December after scoring a team-high 22 and 21 points against Boone and West Orange, respectively, in the lead up to a 37-point team victory over Edgewater in the championship
  • 23 points (10-10 FT) in a 68-66 victory over Bishop Snyder on Dec. 11
  • Season-high 28 points in a 2A state championship rematch against Impact Christian Academy at the Battle at the Villages holiday tournament. He would be recognized as the tournament's most outstanding player.
  • 25 points (7-12 FG, 11-14 FT) against Windermere at the Showdown in O-Town where OCP outscored Windermere 11-2 in the final 2:16 of the game for a 62-59 victory.

Brown's teammate and classmate, Ven-Allen Lubin, received this award last year as a sophomore. Lubin would be selected as the Florida Dairy Farmers 2020 Class 2A Player of the Year.

Coach Burke is no stranger to this recognition by the FACA as he has been been the FACA district coach of the year in 2017, 2018, and 2020.  He would go on to be recognized by the Florida Dairy Farmers as the 2A Coach of the Year in those seasons as well.  OCP won state championships under Coach Burke's leadership in 2017, 2018, and 2020, and will seek their fourth in five consecutive trips to Lakeland this season.
