12 Student-Athletes qualify for Regionals in 17 Events

April 21, 2022 -- Melbourne, Fla.

The 2022 track season has been a busy one for the Warriors in the lead up to the FHSAA 1A Districts on Thursday at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy. Having competed in at least a dozen meets over the season, OCP ran their most successful district in school history by finishing runner-up in the boys division, winning a district championship in the 400m and the two boys relay teams, along with several top finishes that led to qualifications for 12 student-athletes in 17 boys and girls events for regionals.

Sophomore Alexis Garcia won the 400m dash with a time of 50.77. Also winning their district final were the 4x100m relay team of Gadiahwan Louis (Soph.), Bradley Knight (Jr.), Brian Thomas (Jr.), and Demarion Jenkins (Fr.) with a time of 44.28, and the 4x400m relay team of Evan Sierra (Jr.), Nick Rawls (Jr.), Jenkins and Garcia with a time of 3:34.00.

Top 3 finishes were recorded by sophomore Joshua Demosthenes (2nd in 110m Hurdles and 300m Hurdles), Jenkins (2nd in 100m, 3rd in 200m), Louis (3rd in 100m), Garcia (3rd in 800), junior Jeremy Miller (3rd in Shot Put), and  Sierra (3rd in Triple Jump).

The remarkable individual and team success can be highlighted by 13 student-athletes reaching personal-best results on the day. That was the tangible stat head track coach Rackell Goldson was pleased with at the end of the day. But, the intangibles are just as important.

"I am most proud of their hard work and efforts. I am proud of the grind that people do not see. As we all know we do not have a track to practice on so “we get it out the mud” and they all go compete at a high level I am proud that they all trust the process and stay committed to the program even through the rough patches," said Goldson.

Personal-best times and stats were recorded by A. Garcia (800m), Jenkins (100m), Louis (100m), sophomore Yadrial Garcia (100m), Thomas (300m Hurdles/Triple Jump), Knight (Triple Jump), Miller (Javelin Throw), junior Jayden Cooper (1600m/Javelin Throw), Sierra (Triple Jump/Javelin Throw), Rawls (400m), freshman Aaliyah Lewis (400m), senior Brianna Cooper (100m/200m), and junior Aalyssa Gunn (400m/300m Hurdles).

Nine of the 12 student-athletes heading to regionals will be completing in at least two events. And there's a strong possibility that their success at districts could lead to multiple qualifiers for the state tournament and another memorable moment in OCP Track history. But, expect the Warriors to treat the meet like any other meet.

"District is just like a normal track meet for the coaches and athletes. We had no idea that we would be district runner ups at the end of meet," said Coach Goldson. "I knew that I would have several place to go to regionals. Overall, the (results) of the event was definitely memorable!"

Goldson continued, "we will be going to regionals bringing about 10 athletes the most we have ever brought to regionals. I believe we have a very good chance of getting top 3 with our boys relay team and in the 100, 200, 400, and jumps."

Regionals will be held at Mount Dora Christian Academy on Wednesday May 4, 2022. The Top 4 in the regional finals events will advance to the state tournament, which will be Wednesday May 11-14 at James G. Pressly Stadium, Percy Beard Track (Gainesville).
