Orlando Christian Prep Continues to Raise the Bar

03/18/2021, 12:21pm EDT
By BRI MACNAUGHT, Spectrum Sports

ORLANDO, Fla.— Orlando Christian Prep has won nine State Titles in a span of 14 seasons.

The common denominator throughout all of their success is Coach Treig Burke.

“Everyone ask me if you get tired of going to Lakeland and I never get tired of going to Lake Land because there are kids on this team that have never gone,” said Treig Burke, Orlando Christian Prep’s head basketball coach.

Coach Burke has made all nine trips to Lakeland for the State Championships. Four as the head coach and five as an assistant for OCP.

“I am probably more proud of coaching them then they are playing for me because I get to coach some of the best kids around and I enjoy coaching them. I am blessed to have them,” said Coach Burke.

Despite all of their success the Warriors continue to find ways to raise the bar.

“Obviously getting to the end undefeated I mean it’s remarkable what they’ve been able to accomplish this year,” said Coach Burke.

This year’s squad made their mark thanks to their family-like bond.

“This team is special. This team is special. Like very very special,” said Omar Figueroa, a Senior Guard for OCP.

“I think what is so special about us is our chemistry about how we are able to play well together and how we are able to fight through adversity and stay well together,” said Cam Easley, a Senior Center for OCP.

They have a unique bond because of what Coach Burke preaches.

“The strength of the team is the team. You never know when number 11 is now number five and when number 12 is now number 2 you just don’t know. You can lose two or three guys in a week so it was just getting them to understand that the strength of the team is the team,” said Coach Burke.

Constantly putting their team before themselves.

“We all cheer for each other. We all talk to each other when we are down,” said Figueroa.

“Sometimes in order to succeed at life and be a better person you have to think outside the box. You have to think outside of yourself saying if I can help the next guy and the next guy help the next guy then eventually we all help each other out,” said Easley.

Even though Coach Burke’s gold medal collection continues to grow, for him it’s about something much bigger than basketball.

“Winning is great but the most important thing to me now is making sure these seniors can go off to college and have a good experience,” said Coach Burke.

OCP Basketball - Undefeated Back 2 Back State Champions

In a rematch of the 2020 FHSAA 2A State Championship, Orlando Christian Prep(OCP) & Impact Christian Academy(ICA) found each other squared off again to determine the best in the 2A classification.

Both teams came in with something to prove.  For ICA, this would be their 3rd state finals appearance in 4 years with the first two contests relegating them as the runner-up.  As for OCP, they looked to become undefeated Back To Back Champions & extend their winning streak to 47 which began on January 7, 2020.

The first quarter remained close as both teams looked to feel each other out & find their own rhythm.  OCP closed the quarter up 12-11. The second quarter provided a little more overall tempo as OCP stepped up their defensive pressure.  Progressively throughout the quarter, OCP asserted themselves on both ends of the court with them leading  28-21 at the end of the half.

OCP started the second half off right where they left off in the first.  Their full court press & half court defense ultimately proved to be too much for ICA to effectively handle resulting in costly turnovers.  OCP efficiently took advantage of the ICA struggles & steadily pulled away for the remainder of the contest.

The win gave OCP their first undefeated season in school history, 27-0, and their ninth state title.

The loss for ICA closes out season with record of 20-9.

Scoring by quarter

OCP: 12, 16, 12, 11 Final 51

ICA: 11, 10, 7, 4 Final 32

Box score:

Orlando Christian Prep: AJ Brown led all scorers with 18 pts, Ven-Allen Lubin 14 pts, & Ocypher Owens 8 pts.  Jayden Hastings 9 rebounds & 6 blocks.

Impact Christian Academy: Ivan Lawson 17 pts & 7 rebounds, Taylor Thompson 10pts
