November 24, 2021 -- APOPKA, FLA
The OCP varsity boys basketball team opened the 2021-22 season in the 11th annual Earl Graham Metro vs Florida Challenge with a 69-58 victory over Wekiva high school. The annual event pairs teams from the Orange County Public School Metro Conference against public and private schools from across the state.
OCP (1-0) was led by seniors AJ Brown and Ven Allen Lubin. Brown, an Ohio University commit, led all scorers with 22 points, including four 3-pointers, and 8 rebounds. Lubin, a University of Notre Dame, had his first double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds to go with a team-high seven assists.
The undersized Mustangs never backed down as OCP built leads as large as 18 throughout the game. But, their hot shooting from behind the arc pulled them to within seven points in the fourth quarter before Brown hit his 4th long range dagger to build the lead back to 10, ending Wekiva's dream of an upset. Wekiva made 12 three-pointers in total during the game, several from near NBA range, while only making seven two-point field goals.
Junior Jayden Hastings had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Isaiah Brown and Ameer Ramadan added nine and six points, respectively. Freshman Mikell Brown contributed five points.
AJ Brown was recognized as the Game MVP at the end of the game for his overall performance in the victory.
The win was OCP's 48th consecutive, which according to the Orlando Sentinel is the longest winning basketball streak in the Central Florida history.
Next contest for the Warriors is the opening game of the Winter Park Rotary Tournament on Wednesday December 1 against Olympia High School. OCP won the 4-day, 3-game tournament last season for the third time in school history.
